Everyone fondly remembers 'The Wizard of Oz', from Frank L. Baum's enchanting book, the captivating stories that followed, and of course, the legendary 1939 film that remains a timeless masterpiece even after more than 70 years! The 'Oz' stories brilliantly explore themes about home and the magical feeling of being over the rainbow. But what secrets lie beneath that rainbow? Could there be more to it than we've ever imagined? These intriguing questions are at the heart of this exhilarating adaptation of the novel by Gregory Maguire and the sensational stage play by Stephen Schwartz, aptly named: Wicked.
The title 'Wicked' is self-explanatory, yet intriguingly contrary, as it narrates the life and times of the iconic Wicked Witch of the West. This origin story delves into the Witch's early life, revealing her beginnings before she became the figure known to many. She had a life, a name, and a journey that led her down a dark path, and witnessing these unfold offers deep insight into her transformation. Originally portrayed by Broadway star Idina Menzel (famous for Frozen as Queen Elsa, and making a cameo in this film), Cynthia Erivo masterfully brings to the screen what Menzel achieved on stage, with authenticity and vulnerability. Her portrayal in green makeup is strikingly believable, immersing you in her character throughout. Ariana Grande also shines as Glinda, delivering a convincing performance. Initially self-absorbed and single-minded, her interactions with Erivo's character transform their perceptions and approaches to the world around them.
This movie totally nails it in every way, especially with its musical scenes. Since 'The Greatest Showman', there hasn't been a feel-good musical like this... until now. Originally a book and then a play that still wows audiences, 'Wicked' is amazing on screen. The choreography is top-notch, the performances are fantastic, and the story is spot on. From the start to the main plot, character growth, the climax, and the musical numbers, this film hits all the right notes at just the right times, really tugging at the heartstrings. There's nothing about this movie you won't love. A fun surprise was Jeff Goldblum singing—who knew he had it in him, even after four decades in film? Plus, Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh nails her role so well that when her true nature is revealed at the end, it's mind-blowing.
The songs are irresistibly catchy, especially 'Defying Gravity'! This track is the standout, the one you'll remember and play on repeat, thanks to its powerful theme and message—suggesting that the ability to soar is right within our reach, just waiting for us to claim it. Erivo nailed it! Anyone can fly if they choose to, and if you're like Elphaba Thropp, nothing can hold you back. Remember in 'Hook' when Robin Williams' grown-up Peter Pan soared over Neverland after years away? That's the vibe here! Every aspect of this film makes you feel like a kid in a candy store, bringing back the magic of the Land of Oz. 'Wicked' truly captures Oz before Dorothy's arrival changed everything. The history of Elphaba and Glinda and their time together speaks volumes beyond the events that follow.
Wicked wasn't just a movie; it was all about friendship and accepting people no matter their background or fate. When two people become friends, they create a bond that's super strong. But if one of them takes a different path, that bond might stay strong, or it might break. This was shown before in 'Transformers One', and in this one, there's still some respect and good vibes between the two main characters, even though they're on opposite sides. It kind of reminds you of those teen sitcoms where the main and side characters have a lot to figure out, and when things get tough, you've got to make a choice. You either go this way or that way, do this or do that. But no matter what, there's always that spark that won't die out. Even in a place like Oz, there's good and bad in everyone waiting to come out, but it's what we do with them that really counts. In the end, Wicked was an awesome return to musical films, and with part II coming next year, who knows what's going to happen? If it's up for any awards, it should definitely be for choreography, music, and adapted screenplay. And honestly, it should win all of them! Catch it while you can, highly recommended, especially if you're into musicals.
